Article Overview

This article explains the coding considerations for a knee surgery case involving repair of the patellar tendon along with repair of the medial and lateral patellar retinaculum. It is intended for coders and billers who work with orthopedic procedure documentation and need to understand how the case is framed for CPT selection. The article focuses on the overall operative scenario and the coding question raised by the retinaculum repair component.

Why This Topic Matters

Knee extensor mechanism repairs can involve more than one structure, and documentation may raise questions about how separate components of the surgery are reported. Understanding the article helps coders interpret orthopedic operative notes and identify the relevant CPT context for this type of repair.
