Iliotibial band

Patient presents for treatment of a tight iliotibial (IT) band, bursitis, and complete tear of the gluteus medius tendon. In addition to a bursectomy and gluteus medius repair, a window of the iliotibial band was performed. An incision was made over the greater trochanter and taken down through the fatty tissue to the IT band. The IT band was then split longitudinally in line with its fibers. CPT code 27305, Fasciotomy, iliotibial (tenotomy), open, is classified in the CPT Codebook under “knee” and doesn’t seem appropriate when the procedure is performed at the hip.
