We are requesting that the advice regarding the Qoustic Wound Therapy System™, an ultrasonic debridement system, published in Coding Clinic Second Quarter 2010, pages 11-12, be revisited. Coding Clinic recommended assigning code 86.28 , Nonexcisional debridement of wound, infection, or burn, for the ultrasonic debridement system. We disagree with this advice because the system can be used to perform both excisional debridement and nonexcisional (mechanical) debridement. The Qoustic Wound Therapy System™; utilizes ultrasonic energy combined with a surgical Qoustic Qurette™ and is indicated for the selective dissection and fragmentation of tissue, wound debridement and cleansing saline irrigation of the site for the removal of debris, exudates, fragments, and other matter. ...
