Cardiac Mapping (Direct), 37.29
Note: As of October 1, 1988, cardiac mapping is coded to 37.27. An adjunctive type of EP study, known as mapping, currently assigned to 37.29, is used in patients for whom surgical treatment of the arrhythmia is considered, usually after drug or pacing therapy has failed to control the tachycardia. Mapping localizes the arrhythmogenic focus and traces the path of aberrant conduction. This procedure uses a multipoled catheter that records endocardial electrocardiograms to determine where the tachycardia originates. Mapping may be performed both preoperatively and intraoperatively during open heart arrhythmia surgery. Once the focus has been identified...

Article Overview
This article covers direct cardiac mapping as an adjunctive electrophysiology-related procedure and places it in the context of related heart surgery and ablation procedures. It is useful for coding professionals working with procedure classification history, electrophysiology, arrhythmia surgery, and intraoperative coding references. The article also notes how the topic relates to adjacent heart procedure codes and when mapping is identified as an additional procedure.
Why This Topic Matters
Understanding the historical placement of cardiac mapping helps coders interpret archived records and compare related cardiac procedure categories. It also supports accurate review of cases involving electrophysiology studies, arrhythmia surgery, and mapping performed with other heart procedures.
What You Will Learn
- How direct cardiac mapping is positioned within older procedure coding.
- The relationship between mapping and related arrhythmia surgery procedures.
- The historical note about how the procedure was later coded in a different category.
- How mapping is discussed in connection with intraoperative and preoperative cardiac procedures.
Who Should Read This
- Medical coders
- Coding auditors
