Coding Clinic, First Quarter 2015, page 21, advised the assignment of code J96.10, Chronic respiratory failure, unspecified whether with hypoxia or hypercapnia, as the principal diagnosis for a patient who was transferred to a long term care hospital for continued care of chronic respiratory failure following an accidental drug overdose. In this case, shouldn’t the poisoning guideline be applied rather than the one for sequela?   ...
