Effective October 1, 1990, category 753.1, Cystic kidney disease in Chapter 14, Congenital Anomalies, has been expanded to include 5th digits. The index has been modified to reflect these changes. There are major differences in the clinical characteristics, pathophysiology, and prognosis of the various types of cystic kidney disease. For example, medullary sponge kidney is relatively frequent (1/200 in unselected IV pyelograms) and has good prognosis, but medullary cystic kidney can lead to chronic renal failure.
