Code F78, Other intellectual disabilities, has been expanded with the creation of subcategory F78.A, Other genetic related intellectual disabilities. As a result, there are now new codes to capture genetic causes of intellectual disabilities. Code F78.A1, SYNGAP1-related intellectual disability, was created to capture intellectual disability due to insufficiency of the gene SYNGAP1. SYNGAP1 is one of the more common genes related to intellectual disability, and its presence is an essential part of neurodevelopment and neuron function.
