Code M48.06, Spinal stenosis, lumbar region, has been expanded and new codes have been created for spinal stenosis of the lumbar region with (M48.062) and without (M48.061) neurogenic claudication. Lumbar spinal stenosis is spinal canal narrowing. This condition does not imply a symptomatic condition or a condition requiring surgery. Neurogenic claudication is a commonly used term for a syndrome associated with significant lumbar spinal stenosis leading to compression of the cauda equina (lumbar nerves).
