A 24-year-old pregnant patient was admitted for induction of labor. Her medical history includes subclinical hypothyroidism, which is being treated with levothyroxine. When referencing “hypothyroidism,” in the Alphabetic Index, the only subentry for “subclinical” includes the phrase “iodine deficiency related” which is indexed to code E02, Subclinical iodine-deficiency hypothyroidism. Is it appropriate to assign code E02 when subclinical hypothyroidism is documented without mention of iodine-deficiency? What is the appropriate code assignment for subclinical hypothyroidism, which is not specified? ...
