AMA Comment Small vaginal tears are not considered a complication of delivery. If minor vaginal tearing occurs and the repair is minimal, it would be considered management of uncomplicated labor and delivery and not coded separately. If, however, an extensive laceration occurs, the -22 modifier may be appended to the global vaginal delivery code to identify the additional effort involved in the repair.
