Stereotactic-guided Breast Needle Biopsy
Spring 2023 pages 9-12 CLINICAL EXAMPLE 2 Stereotactic-guided Breast Needle Biopsy CLINICAL HISTORY 65-year-old female with indeterminate microcalcifications in the upper outer quadrant of the left breast on recent mammogram. TECHNIQUE AND FINDINGS Informed consent was obtained. Standard time-out was performed before starting the procedure. The patient was positioned upright in the mammogram unit with the left breast compressed in the lateromedial projection using the fenestrated biopsy paddle. The microcalcifications were confirmed and targeted. After standard sterile preparation of the skin surface, a 2% lidocaine solution was injected in the skin and deeper tissues for localized anesthesia. A small skin...

Article Overview
This article reviews a stereotactic-guided breast needle biopsy clinical example and the associated coding discussion for breast imaging and biopsy reporting. It is relevant to radiology, breast imaging, and coding professionals who work with CPT and ICD-10-CM guidance, Medicare coverage references, and related procedural documentation. The article also compares how similar breast biopsy scenarios may be reported when imaging modality, equipment setup, or post-procedure imaging circumstances differ.
Why This Topic Matters
The article helps readers understand how a breast biopsy case is documented and how the associated coding guidance is framed across procedure, imaging, and diagnosis reporting. It is useful for teams that need to align radiology documentation with current coding references and coverage-related context.
