CPT Knowledgebase - Feb 4, 2016

When an entire fallopian tube is removed during a sterilization procedure and submitted for pathologic exam and report, the clinical history we receive from the surgeon varies. Some cases are documented only as sterilization. Others document sterilization AND additional information such as a personal or family history of ovarian cancer, genetic markers such as BRCA +, or surgeons written request for neoplasia evaluation, all of which require the pathologist to perform a higher level of work than that of a typical sterilization procedure. What situations, if any, would warrant the specimen to be coded at a higher level than the CPT listed code 88302 Fallopian tube, sterilization.?
