CPT Knowledgebase - Jun 22, 2010

We understand that code 50590 is a unilateral code and if the physician is treating one kidney stone in the right kidney and one kidney stone in the left kidney, it would be appropriate to report 50590 for the first in the right kidney and 50590-50 (depending on the payer) to report the second kidney stone in the left kidney. However, if the physician treats two kidney stones in the same kidney would it be correct to submit code 50590 for the first stone and 50590-59 for the second stone? Or is code 50590 meant to be used for multiple kidney stones in the same kidney (during the same session)?
