Acute Myocardial Infarction Fifth Digits
Revisions in the definitions for the acute myocardial infarction fifth-digit notes have been made to provide clarification of the intended use of the fifth-digits. The term "acute phase of care" used in the current definition appears to have been the main source of the confusion.
The fifth-digit of "1" (initial episode of care) covers all care provided to a newly diagnosed myocardial infarction patient until the patient is discharged from medical care. This includes any transfers to and from other facilities prior to the patient's discharge and occurring within the eight-week time frame.
