Coronary Artery Bifurcation
Coding Clinic Fourth Quarter 2016, page 87, assigned only one code for a lesion in the left anterior descending (LAD) that extended into the diagonal 1 branch at the bifurcation. Should a lesion in the LAD, which extends into the diagonal 1 branch at the bifurcation, be coded as two separate arteries, one with Qualifier value “6” for the LAD, and one with the Qualifier value “Z” for the diagonal 1 branch? Coders are confused about the bifurcation qualifier and if the two ICD-10-PCS codes should have been assigned and the bifurcation qualifier assigned for both vessels.
