CMS updates the payment methodology for influenza and PPV vaccines
Since August 1, 2000, PPV and influenza virus vaccines provided to the hospital outpatient departments were paid under the OPPS. Effective January 1, 2003, payment will be made on a reasonable cost basis for hospitals.
According to Transmittal 796, Medicare has made certain payment changes for services provided for pneumococcal pneumonia, influenza virus and hepatitis B vaccines.
Although the effective date of the change to payment for influenza and PPV vaccines and their administration is January 1, 2003, due to the need for shared systems changes, this provision will be implemented in July.
