AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 2009 Issue 4; VOLUMES 1 & 2 NEW/REVISED CODES
Acute and Chronic Venous Embolism and Thrombosis of Deep and Superficial Vessels
Effective October 1, 2009, two new subcategories (453.5 and 453.7) have been created to identify chronic venous embolism and thrombosis of deep vessels of the lower extremities and other specified vessels. In addition, subcategory 453.8, Other venous embolism and thrombosis, of other specified sites, has been revised to identify acute forms of venous embolism and thrombosis. Subcategory 453.8 has also been expanded with unique codes for superficial veins of the upper extremity, deep veins of upper extremity, axillary veins, subclavian veins, internal jugular veins and other thoracic veins.
