Alcohol Septal Ablation
The patient had congestive heart failure with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and underwent alcohol septal ablation in conjunction with left heart catheterization and coronary angiography. During the intervention, a balloon catheter was advanced into the vessel over a Whisper wire. The balloon was inflated to occlude the vessel proximally. The wire was removed, the lumen aspirated and contrast injected to verify complete vessel occlusion. 2ml of absolute ethanol was then infused. Septal ablation was successfully performed via the first septal branch of the left anterior descending artery. How is alcohol septal ablation coded in ICD-10-PCS? ...

Article Overview
This article explains a cardiac coding scenario involving alcohol septal ablation performed alongside left heart catheterization and coronary angiography. It is intended for coders and billers working with inpatient procedure coding, especially those reviewing ICD-10-PCS assignment in cardiovascular cases. The article focuses on how the procedure is framed, the anatomy involved, and the procedural context that affects code selection.
Why This Topic Matters
Alcohol septal ablation is a specialized cardiovascular intervention with coding implications that can affect accurate procedure reporting and inpatient record abstraction. Understanding the procedural context helps coding professionals review case documentation and align it with ICD-10-PCS conventions.
