Ascites

Effective October 1, 2007, code 789.5, Ascites, has been expanded to separately identify malignant ascites (789.51) and other ascites (789.59). The term “malignant ascites” had previously been an inclusion term at code 197.6. Ascites describes the condition of pathologic fluid accumulation within the abdominal cavity. The most common causes of ascites are cirrhosis, congestive heart failure, mycobacterium tuberculosus and carcinoma (malignant ascites).
