Coronary Artery Procedures
Coronary Atherectomy Note: As of October 1, 2005, code 00.66 is used to report percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty [PTCA] or coronary atherectomy. Assign also a code to identify the number of vessels treated (00.40-00.43). As of October 1, 2005, assign code 99.10 as an additional code for the injection or infusion of a thrombolytic agent performed in conjunction with the PTCA. Physicians contacted indicated that changes in terminology have occurred over the last several years. The term atherectomy is the newer term to describe transluminal procedures. There are three types of atherectomies: laser; directional; and...

Article Overview
This article covers coronary artery procedure terminology and coding considerations for atherectomy, angioplasty, endarterectomy, and complications that may follow coronary interventions or bypass surgery. It is intended for coding professionals who need a broad understanding of procedure categories, complication categories, and the time-based updates and clarification notices referenced in the source.
Why This Topic Matters
Coronary artery procedures are closely tied to multiple diagnosis and procedure code families, and the article summarizes how the subject is organized for coding reference purposes. It is relevant to coders reviewing coronary intervention documentation, associated complications, and historically referenced code updates.
