Double-J Ureteral Stent Placement (Dilation)

A patient had a renal ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) scan that showed a large obstructing stone in the right upper ureter associated with hydronephrosis. The patient agreed to undergo cystoscopy with double-J ureteral stent placement. Rigid cystoscopy was performed, and a ureteral catheter was passed inside the ureteral orifice. Multiple attempts to pass the wire through the catheter were unsuccessful due to the ureter being kinked and tortuous just before the stone. After further attempts, a Teflon wire was placed within the collecting system and a hydronephrotic drip was observed through the catheter.
