Neoplasms of Unspecified Nature, Retina and Choroid

Effective October 1, 2009, a new code has been created at category 239, Neoplasms of unspecified nature, to identify a dark area or spot within the retina. These dark areas are correctly referred to as neoplasms or “suspected melanoma” and must continually be evaluated. However, since a biopsy of the retina is difficult and poses a risk to the eye, and is done only after such an area or spot grows, there is generally no tissue sample to confirm the diagnosis.
