AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 2008 Issue 4; VOLUMES 1 AND 2 NEW/REVISED CODES
Retinopathy of Prematurity
Effective October 1, 2008, new codes have been created to uniquely identify retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). ROP is a disorder of the blood vessels of the retina in a premature infant. It is a leading cause of blindness in children. ROP occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow and spread throughout the retina. When a baby is born prematurely, eye development can be disrupted. The vessels may stop growing or grow abnormally from the retina into the normally clear gel that fills the back of the eye. The vessels are fragile and can leak, causing bleeding in the eye, leading...

Article Overview
This article covers the coding update for retinopathy of prematurity within the eye and adnexa diagnosis category, including the introduction of new diagnosis codes and the relationship to an older retinal condition term. It is relevant for medical coders, ophthalmology practices, neonatal care teams, and anyone working with diagnosis coding changes tied to prematurity-related eye disease. The article also provides broad clinical background on the condition, its staging, and why the coding update was created.
Why This Topic Matters
Accurate diagnosis coding for prematurity-related retinal disease is important for clinical documentation, claim submission, and tracking of condition severity. This update helps distinguish related retinal diagnoses and aligns coding with the condition’s staged presentation.
Article Sections
-
Clinical overview of retinopathy of prematurity
Provides a general introduction to the condition, its relationship to premature birth, and its impact on vision and blindness. Summarizes broad clinical context and why the condition may require intervention.
-
Classification and terminology
Describes the staging framework used for the condition and notes an older term associated with cicatricial disease. Focuses on terminology and severity categories at a high level.
-
Disorders of the eye and adnexa (360-379)
Presents the relevant diagnosis coding category within the eye and adnexa chapter and the surrounding retinal disorder grouping. Includes the code update context for this area.
