Premature Menopause

Effective October 1, 2001, code 256.3, Other ovarian failure, has been expanded to provide a unique code for premature menopause. Premature menopause, also called early menopause or premature ovarian failure, is defined as the natural loss of ovarian function in women under 40 years of age. Menstrual periods cease, estrogen is low and the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) level is elevated. Premature menopause occurs in up to 1% of women under the age of 40.
