Article Overview
This article covers ICD-10-PCS and related hip revision procedure coding changes effective October 1, 2005. It is relevant to coders, CDI staff, orthopedics, and reimbursement teams who need to understand how revision hip replacement procedures are categorized, how related procedure codes are referenced, and what code-titling updates were introduced.
Why This Topic Matters
Hip revision procedures are clinically complex and can involve different component combinations, so accurate code identification supports consistent data reporting and communication. The article also highlights related coding references that may affect how revision cases are captured in procedure coding workflows.
Article Sections
-
Overview of revision hip replacement coding changes
Introduces the new hip procedure subcategory and summarizes the types of revision procedures addressed in the article. It also notes related coding references that may be associated with these procedures.
-
Types of revision hip replacement procedures
Provides a broad discussion of the major revision procedure categories and the clinical factors that influence procedure complexity. It outlines the general differences among combined, isolated component, and modular exchange revisions.
-
Combined femoral and acetabular component revision
Describes the combined revision category and the general circumstances in which it may be used. The section discusses overall complexity and the kinds of surgical reconstruction issues that can arise.
-
Isolated acetabular component revision
Covers revision of the acetabular component and broad reasons the procedure may be performed. It also discusses the general reconstructive considerations associated with this type of revision.
-
Femoral component revision
Summarizes isolated femoral revision and the broad clinical factors that can influence the procedure. The section includes general discussion of implant removal, bone conditions, and recovery differences.
-
Isolated modular femoral head and acetabular liner exchange
Reviews the modular head and liner exchange category and the broader circumstances in which it may be considered. It contrasts this procedure with revisions involving larger component replacement.
-
Code update details
Lists the formal coding update items associated with the revision hip replacement changes. It includes the newly created code subcategory, revised code title, and related add-on references.
