March 2021 page 5 Irreversible Electroporation Ablation: New Codes for 2021 Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a new technology used in cancer treatment. Similar to chemotherapy, IRE destroys cancer cells. Unlike chemotherapy, IRE destroys cells with ultra-short pulsed electrical current by creating permanent small pores (known as nanopores) in the cell membrane, disrupting homeostasis. For the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2021 code set, two new Category III codes (0600T, 0601T) were established to report IRE with imaging guidance, when performed.
