Guidance is needed on the description of functional cortical and subcortical mapping by stimulation and/or recording of electrodes (95961) when performed during a deep brain stimulator (DBS) implantation procedure (61863). According to the Special EEG Tests guidelines, electronic analysis at the time of implantation is not separately reported; however, the guidelines also state, "If another physician participates in neurophysiological mapping during a deep brain stimulator implantation procedure, this service may be reported by the other physician with codes 95961-95962." Because these are time-based codes and the time is based on the attendance of the physician, when does the time start and end for codes 95961-95962? Does the time start the moment the neurologist is present, and their participation begins during the DBS procedure? Or does the time start and end only when the functional cortical and subcortical mapping by stimulation and/or recording of electrodes is performed?
