Cowpox and Other Types of Poxvirus Infections

Effective October 1, 2008, code 051.0, Cowpox, has been expanded to separately identify Cowpox (051.01) and Vaccinia not from vaccination (051.02). Prior to this change both conditions were classified to code 051.0. Although the virus that causes Cowpox is related to the virus responsible for the Vaccinia virus, they are two distinct conditions. In addition, a new category, 059, Other poxvirus infections, has been created to differentiate between the various types of other poxviruses: orthopoxviruses (059.00-059.09); parapoxviruses (059.10-059.19); and yatapoxviruses (059.20-059.22). Poxviruses infecting humans can be grouped into five...

Article Overview

This article explains revisions to poxvirus-related diagnosis coding and outlines the broader clinical grouping of human poxvirus infections. It is relevant to coders, auditors, clinicians, and compliance staff who need to understand the ICD-9-CM category changes, the related infection groupings, and the coding structure added for different poxvirus types effective October 1, 2008.

Why This Topic Matters

Poxvirus diagnoses were reorganized into more specific categories and subcategories, affecting how related infections are classified in ICD-9-CM. The article helps readers understand the scope of the change and the major infection types addressed by the revised structure.

Article Sections

  1. Coding revision overview

Introduces the ICD-9-CM updates to the poxvirus diagnosis category and summarizes the scope of the changes effective October 1, 2008.

  2. Clinical background on human poxviruses

Describes the major poxvirus genera that infect humans and gives broad clinical context for the infection groupings discussed in the coding update.

  3. Cowpox and vaccinia discussion

Summarizes the clinical characteristics and transmission context of cowpox-related infections and the distinction noted in the article between related conditions.

  4. Parapoxvirus infections

Reviews the parapoxvirus group and its general associations with animal contact and human infection patterns.

  5. Yatapoxvirus infections

Covers the yatapoxvirus group, its general epidemiology, and the populations or settings highlighted in the article.

  6. Molluscum contagiosum and other unclassified poxviruses

Addresses the remaining poxvirus groupings discussed in the article and the broader classification of less common or unclassified infections.

  7. ICD-9-CM revision details

Lists the revised ICD-9-CM category structure, including newly created categories, subcategories, and related exclusions referenced by the article.
