Code O90.4, Postpartum acute kidney failure, was expanded and new codes have been created to identify hepatorenal syndrome following labor and delivery (O90.41) and other postpartum acute kidney failure, including puerperal anuria and oliguria (O90.49). Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) is a serious complication of decompensated liver disease, causing decreased renal perfusion that can lead to prerenal acute kidney failure. Postpartum acute kidney failure is a serious obstetric complication that increases the risk of maternal morbidity and mortality.
