Pediatric HIV
Physicians in our pediatric infectious disease clinic document that patients are either HIV positive or HIV infected. The physicians prefer not to use the terminology “AIDS.†They categorize these patients according to the CDC classification system for HIV infection in children. For example, a 12-year-old clinic patient was documented as “HIV infected C-2†with no further information regarding past or present HIV-related illness. According to CDC guidelines, “C-2†describes this patient as severely symptomatic. How should this encounter be coded?
