The HIV guidelines in Fourth Quarter 1994, page 32, Section 10.5, HIV Infection in Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Puerperium, stated that code 647.8X, Other specified infectious and parasitic diseases in the mother classifiable elsewhere, but complicating the pregnancy, childbirth, or the puerperium, followed by code 042, HIV disease, should be assigned when HIV or AIDS is complicating the pregnancy. However, effective 10/1/94, the correct code for HIV in pregnancy is 647.6X, Other viral diseases, followed by code 042, HIV disease, and other codes for the HIV-related illness(es).
