Percutaneous Mitral Valve Repair with Implant

Effective October 1, 2010, a new code (35.97) has been created to identify percutaneous mitral valve repair with implant. Currently more than 4 million patients in the United States suffer from clinically significant mitral valve regurgitation (MR) and until recently, open heart surgery was the only therapeutic option. However, a new percutaneous endovascular approach to treat mitral valve regurgitation using the MitraClip® implant has been developed. The MitraClip® implant is a minimally invasive, closed chest catheter-based approach for intracardiac repair of MR caused by valve pathology and/or left ventricular dysfunction. The procedure is performed on a beating heart...

Article Overview

This article covers the October 1, 2010 coding update for a new procedure code associated with a minimally invasive mitral valve repair approach using an implant. It is aimed at coders, coding educators, and clinical documentation staff who need to understand how the update affects mitral valve procedure classification, related exclusions, and linked imaging guidance coding references. The discussion also contrasts the new code with an existing balloon valvuloplasty code and notes a related transesophageal echocardiography code reference.

Why This Topic Matters

The article matters because it documents a code set change that affects how a specific mitral valve repair procedure is classified and reported. It also helps prevent confusion between closely related cardiovascular procedures and supports accurate reporting of associated imaging guidance references.

Article Sections

  1. Code update and procedure context

Introduces the coding change, the procedure setting, and the broader clinical context for minimally invasive mitral valve repair. It also frames the update within cardiovascular procedure coding.

  2. Procedure overview

Summarizes the general catheter-based approach, access route, and device placement workflow described in the article. The focus is on the broad procedural sequence and the role of imaging guidance.

  3. Coding revisions and exclusions

Describes the code revision, the addition of a new procedure code, and the relationship to a related balloon valvuloplasty entry. It also notes the associated echocardiography reference mentioned in the article.

  4. Coding question and answer

Presents the article's sample coding scenario and the cited code assignment response. This section is included as a relevance aid for readers seeking practical coding guidance.
