Thoracoscopic and Thoracoscopically-Assisted Ablation of Heart Tissue (Maze Procedure)

Effective October 1, 2010, a new code has been created to specifically describe the maze procedure performed via a thoracoscopic approach or a thoracoscopically-assisted approach (37.37). Previously the procedure classification only provided codes for maze procedures performed via an open chest approach (37.33) and an endovascular approach (37.34). The maze procedure is a surgical approach used to treat atrial fibrillation by creating lines or scars which block conduction pathways in the heart itself. The classic maze procedure is performed through an open chest approach, creating the lines with a scalpel by a carefully placed pattern of...

Article Overview

This coding update article covers an ICD procedure classification change affecting the maze procedure and related ablation of heart tissue. It is intended for coders, CDI staff, and reimbursement professionals who need to understand how the procedure taxonomy was revised across open, endovascular, and thoracoscopic approaches. The article also discusses the clinical and technical context for the different surgical access methods and the related exclusion structure in the code set.

Why This Topic Matters

It helps readers understand a newly added procedure classification for thoracoscopic heart-tissue ablation and how it fits among other maze-procedure approach categories.

Article Sections

  1. Clinical and procedural background

Provides an overview of the maze procedure and the broader procedural context for treating atrial arrhythmias. It also summarizes the main access approaches discussed in the article.

  2. Coding revision overview

Describes the procedure classification update effective October 1, 2010 and the related changes to the code family. The section frames the revision in relation to existing approach-based categories.

  3. Approach-specific code changes

Summarizes the revisions tied to open and endovascular approaches and introduces the thoracoscopic category. It highlights how the article organizes the access-method distinctions within the procedure classification.

  4. Thoracoscopic and thoracoscopically-assisted approach context

Explains the technical context for thoracoscopic and thoracoscopically-assisted methods and how they differ from other access routes. The section discusses the general operative setting and visualization considerations.
