Transcatheter Replacement of Heart Valve
Effective October 1, 2011, subcategory 35.0 has been expanded and new codes have been created to report endovascular replacement of aortic valve (35.05), transapical replacement of aortic valve (35.06), endovascular replacement of pulmonary valve (35.07), transapical replacement of pulmonary valve (35.08) and endovascular replacement of unspecified heart valve (35.09). Article Overview
This coding update article covers changes to heart valve procedure classification effective October 1, 2011, including newly created transcatheter replacement codes, revisions to open and other valve replacement categories, and related notes and exclusions. It is useful for coding professionals working in cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology, and pediatric congenital heart procedures who need to understand the scope of the updated heart valve procedure codes and how the revision affects the broader valve replacement section.
Why This Topic Matters
Heart valve procedure coding was expanded and reorganized, so reviewers need to know which sections were revised, which new procedure categories were added, and which related categories were updated for consistency. The article helps readers locate the applicable code family and understand the general structure of the changes without relying on the full premium text.
