Transcatheter Replacement of Heart Valve

Effective October 1, 2011, subcategory 35.0 has been expanded and new codes have been created to report endovascular replacement of aortic valve (35.05), transapical replacement of aortic valve (35.06), endovascular replacement of pulmonary valve (35.07), transapical replacement of pulmonary valve (35.08) and endovascular replacement of unspecified heart valve (35.09). This new catheter-based technology allows for implantation of a prosthetic heart valve within the diseased native valve without the need for open heart surgery or cardiopulmonary bypass. There are two approaches to transcatheter aortic valve and pulmonary valve replacement: endovascular and transapical. Transcatheter aortic...

Article Overview

This coding update article covers changes to heart valve procedure classification effective October 1, 2011, including newly created transcatheter replacement codes, revisions to open and other valve replacement categories, and related notes and exclusions. It is useful for coding professionals working in cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology, and pediatric congenital heart procedures who need to understand the scope of the updated heart valve procedure codes and how the revision affects the broader valve replacement section.

Why This Topic Matters

Heart valve procedure coding was expanded and reorganized, so reviewers need to know which sections were revised, which new procedure categories were added, and which related categories were updated for consistency. The article helps readers locate the applicable code family and understand the general structure of the changes without relying on the full premium text.

Article Sections

  1. Overview of transcatheter heart valve replacement

Introduces the procedure category, the effective date of the update, and the broad clinical context for catheter-based valve replacement techniques.

  2. Transcatheter aortic and pulmonary valve replacement approaches

Summarizes the broad procedural approaches discussed for aortic and pulmonary valve replacement and the general technology used in these interventions.

  3. Revision of heart valve operations category and related notes

Describes the parent heart valve operations category, its revised subcategory, and general note language affecting related heart valve procedures.

  4. New transcatheter replacement codes

Covers the newly added transcatheter replacement procedure codes and the broad placement of each within the heart valve coding structure.

  5. Revisions to open and other heart valve replacement codes

Summarizes changes made to the open and other replacement section, including updated titles, inclusions, and exclusions across multiple valve categories.

  6. Percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty note updates

Notes the related revision to the balloon valvuloplasty code area and its relationship to the updated transcatheter valve replacement section.
