Phlebotomy
Phlebotomy is defined as incision of vein. However, it is clinically used to mean puncture of a vein in order to therapeutically remove blood from a patient with one of several different conditions (e.g., hemochromatosis, polycythemia vera) or merely to withdraw blood for diagnostic testing. Venipuncture is a puncture of the vein and is a term synonymous with phlebotomy used to withdraw blood for diagnostic testing.
