AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 1998 Fourth Quarter; VOLUME 3 NEW/REVISED CODES
Platelet Inhibitors
Note: As of October 1, 2005, code 00.66 is used to report percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty [PTCA] or coronary atherectomy. Assign also a code to identify the number of vessels treated (00.40-00.43). When code 36.04, Intracoronary artery thrombolytic infusion, was implemented in October, 1986, it was intended to describe the infusion of platelet inhibitors. However, it was discovered that the code did not meet industry needs as 36.04 was written for direct coronary artery injection, infusion or catheterization. Code 99.20, Injection or infusion of platelet inhibitor, was created to better meet statistical gathering...

Article Overview
This article covers platelet inhibitor therapy, its clinical role in cardiovascular and ischemic conditions, and how related inpatient procedure coding concepts are discussed in connection with angioplasty and coronary care. It is intended for coders, compliance staff, and revenue cycle professionals who need to understand the coding context for these therapies and the associated diagnosis and procedure code references.
Why This Topic Matters
Platelet inhibitor therapy appears in high-acuity cardiovascular settings where accurate coding and data capture are important for clinical reporting, statistics, and reimbursement workflows.
