Thrombocytopenia Secondary to Consumption following Surgery
A patient with mild thrombocytopenia, which was present on admission (POA) was admitted for spinal surgery. During the hospitalization the patient was diagnosed with exacerbation of baseline thrombocytopenia, likely secondary to consumption following surgery. Is this considered a secondary thrombocytopenia or just a worsening of the patient’s existing thrombocytopenia? What is the correct code assignment and POA indicator for the thrombocytopenia?
