Q&A: AAOS OKs separate billing for intraosseous needle placement with total joint codes

Question: Do you have any information regarding intraosseous infusion during a total knee or total hip replacement? Our physician states according to the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), he is to bill code 36680 with his TKA and THA codes. Our billing department has advised us that these injections are an integral part of the procedure and we should not bill this separately.
