Complications of Stem Cell Transplant

Effective October 1, 2011, a new code has been created to uniquely identify complications of stem cell transplants (996.88). Prior to this change, ICD-9-CM did not have a code to identify complications of stem cell transplant. In the interim, coders had been instructed to assign code 996.89, Complications of transplanted organ, other specified transplanted organ. Article Overview

This article covers an ICD-9-CM update effective October 1, 2011 related to complications of stem cell transplant procedures. It explains the broader transplant context, the types of stem cell sources discussed, and the general kinds of complications that may be encountered in coding discussions. It is relevant to coders and billing professionals working with transplant-related diagnoses and ICD-9-CM complication reporting.

Why This Topic Matters

Stem cell transplant cases can involve complex post-procedure diagnoses and historical coding changes. Understanding the scope of this update helps coders recognize when transplant complication coding guidance is being discussed in older ICD-9-CM materials.

What You Will Learn

  • How this ICD-9-CM article frames a new complication code for stem cell transplant cases
  • What general transplant sources and complication categories are discussed
  • How the article situates stem cell transplant complication coding within older ICD-9-CM guidance context
  • Which transplant-related diagnoses are illustrated in the article's example scenario
