AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 2011 Issue 4; VOLUMES 1 & 2 NEW/REVISED CODES
Anaphylactic Reactions
Effective October 1, 2011, codes for anaphylactic reaction due to food (995.60-995.69) have been retitled, to make it more apparent as to what is included in the code assignment. Previously, codes for anaphylactic reactions were titled “anaphylactic shock,†with inclusion terms and indexing to indicate that all such reactions are included, even without shock. However, the descriptions for these codes were somewhat problematic for clinicians. At the request of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), specific codes have been created to describe anaphylactic reaction...

Article Overview
This article provides a coding-focused review of anaphylactic and serum-related reaction categories, along with the clinical background that helps distinguish reaction types across allergy, transfusion, and vaccination contexts. It is useful for coders, CDI professionals, and clinicians who need to understand how the underlying classifications were updated and how the topic is organized within the affected diagnosis code families.
Why This Topic Matters
The topic affects diagnosis selection for allergic and hypersensitivity reactions tied to food, blood products, vaccines, and other serum exposures. Clear understanding of the updated categories and related exclusions helps support accurate documentation review and code assignment.
Article Sections
-
Clinical background on anaphylactic and serum reactions
This section summarizes the general clinical characteristics of anaphylactic reactions and other serum-related hypersensitivity responses. It also discusses broad presentation patterns across different exposure types.
-
Diagnosis code update overview
This section describes the revision of affected diagnosis categories and the addition of new entries within related code families. It focuses on the structure of the update and the major groupings involved.
-
Transfusion-related reaction context and exclusions
This section addresses reaction patterns associated with blood and blood product administration and related instructional notes. It also references how this topic is differentiated from other transfusion-related categories.
-
Vaccination-related reaction context
This section covers allergic reactions associated with vaccines and the general clinical basis for those reactions. It remains at a broad educational level rather than providing code-selection detail.
-
Serum sickness and related immune reactions
This section discusses serum sickness and related immune response concepts in general terms. It places these reactions within the broader serum-reaction classification context.
-
Code update list and coding scenario
This section presents the affected diagnosis code families and a brief transfusion scenario used to frame the article's coding topic. It is intended to show the scope of the update without replacing the full premium guidance.
