Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation With or Without Purging

Effective October 1, 2000, changes have been made to the bone marrow transplant and hematopoietic stem cell transplant codes to uniquely capture information on the use or nonuse of purging (cell selection) procedures associated with the transplantation. Stem cell purging performed in conjunction with autologous stem cell transplantation reduces tumor cells that can contaminate the blood. This process potentially decreases the risk of post-transplant disease recurrence associated with these tumor cells.
