Intravascular Spectroscopy

Effective October 1, 2008, a new code (38.23) was created to specifically identify intravascular spectroscopy. This procedure is performed to identify the chemical composition of coronary plaques by shining a near infrared (NIR) light at the plaque and measuring the amount of light reflected at different wavelengths (spectroscopy). The procedure is performed on patients undergoing cardiac catheterization. The NIR system consists of a laser light source, an automated pullback and rotation device, an intravascular chemography (IVCG) catheter, which provides an optical signal, and a console. The system is used during a coronary stenting procedure to interrogate â&euro...

Article Overview

This article provides a focused overview of intravascular spectroscopy, including the clinical context in which it is performed, the technology involved, and the coding changes associated with its separate identification. It is intended for coding professionals and clinicians who need to understand the procedure at a high level and how it relates to other intravascular imaging concepts.

Why This Topic Matters

The article matters because it highlights a newly recognized procedure category and clarifies how it fits within related intravascular imaging reporting. That makes it relevant for accurate procedure classification, documentation review, and code-set awareness.

What You Will Learn

  • What intravascular spectroscopy is in broad clinical terms
  • How the procedure is performed in the cardiac catheterization setting
  • Which general technology components are involved
  • How the article frames the procedure within related intravascular imaging topics
