AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 2004 Issue 4; VOLUME 3 NEW/REVISED PROCEDURE CODES
Intravascular Imaging
Effective October 1, 2004, unique codes have been created for intravascular imaging procedures. Intravascular imaging is a catheter-based ultrasound imaging technique that allows viewing of the inside of a vessel. This technology is used in the diagnosis and management of coronary and peripheral vascular disease, as well as to visualize intracardiac structures during electrophysiology procedures. These codes should not be applied to intravascular MRI. Although both technologies “image†the vessel, IVUS is performed in real time and uses sound waves to view the lumen. MRI or magnetic resonance imaging takes pictures for delayed review...

Article Overview
This coding update covers the introduction of intravascular imaging procedure coding and how the new categories are organized by vessel type. It is relevant for coding professionals working with vascular, cardiovascular, and electrophysiology-related imaging services, and it notes the broader context of ICD-9-CM coordination and tabular updates.
Why This Topic Matters
The article helps readers recognize that intravascular imaging was given distinct procedure codes and understand the overall scope of the new vessel-based structure. It also highlights that the update supersedes earlier published guidance, which may affect historical coding references.
