Effective October 1, 2004, new codes have been created to expand the reporting of laparoscopic gastroenterostomy (44.38) and laparoscopic procedures for creation of esophagogastric sphincteric competence (44.67). Prior to the creation of these new codes the ICD-9-CM procedural classification did not provide unique codes to describe these laparoscopic gastric surgeries.
