Laparoscopic Repair of Colon
Effective October 1, 2008, codes for laparoscopic repair of colon are also included in category 17. The current ICD-9-CM procedure codes do not distinguish between open and laparoscopic colo-rectal surgery (removal of portions of the large bowel and rectum). The lack of specificity for these codes made it very difficult to track what type of surgical approach was used.
