Laparoscopic Procedures

The endoscopic approach is becoming more frequent in a variety of different surgical procedures. The ICD-9-CM classification does not always provide a way to differentiate between open surgical procedures vs. those done via laparoscopic approach. As of October 1, 1996, new codes have been created to differentiate some procedures performed via an endoscopic approach. Many methods may be employed to accomplish the same result, such as cautery, CO2 laser, or ND-YAG laser. Article Overview

This article is a coding guidance piece for ICD-9-CM procedure coding that discusses the growing use of laparoscopic and other endoscopic surgical approaches. It focuses on procedure classification updates, appendectomy category revisions, and example questions that illustrate how related surgical procedures are reported. The content is most relevant to coders and compliance staff working with surgical procedure assignment and historical ICD-9-CM guidance.

Why This Topic Matters

Understanding how laparoscopic procedures are represented in procedure coding helps reduce inconsistent reporting and supports accurate application of ICD-9-CM surgical codes in records that involve endoscopic approaches.

Article Sections

  1. Overview

Introduces the increasing use of endoscopic approaches in surgery and notes the need for procedure classification updates. It frames the article as guidance related to historical ICD-9-CM coding changes.

  2. Appendectomy

Reviews the revised appendectomy categories and related incidental appendectomy groupings. The section presents the procedure classification changes discussed in the article.

  3. Coding Questions and Answers

Contains example questions about laparoscopic appendectomy and a related multi-procedure surgery scenario. The section illustrates how the article addresses coding assignment concerns in practice.
