Effective October 1, 2008, a new category 17, Other miscellaneous procedures, has been created that includes new codes to identify laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernias. Additionally, codes in category 53, Repair of hernia, have been revised. Surgery is the only treatment and cure for inguinal or ventral hernias. Hernia repair is one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States.
