AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 2006 Issue 4; VOLUME 3 NEW/REVISED CODES
Ablative Procedures
Effective October 1, 2006, new codes have been created to uniquely identify tumor ablation of lung (32.24-32.26), liver (50.23-50.26) and renal (55.32-55.35) lesions. Tumor ablation is an alternative to surgical removal of lesions. Ablation can be achieved using extreme heat, freezing (cryoablation), chemicals, focused ultrasound, microwaves or radiofrequency. ICD-9-CM procedure codes for ablation do not distinguish between the different energy sources used to ablate the tumor. Instead, the classification of ablation is arranged by the operative approach used, such as open, percutaneous, laparoscopic or thoracoscopic, and other and unspecified. Minimally invasive, image-guided ablation...

Article Overview
This article explains a set of ICD-9-CM procedure code updates for ablative procedures involving lung, liver, and renal lesions. It is relevant to coders, billers, and clinical documentation staff who need to understand how these procedures are organized by operative approach and how related non-ablation codes are distinguished. The discussion focuses on the scope of the 2006 code changes, the procedure categories involved, and the structure of the related exclusion notes.
Why This Topic Matters
These coding changes affect how tumor ablation procedures are classified and reported, which can influence documentation accuracy and code selection for interventional, surgical, and radiology-related services.
Article Sections
-
Overview of tumor ablation code changes
Introduces the procedure category changes and the anatomic sites addressed by the update. Summarizes the general organization of the coding revisions.
-
Lung ablation codes and related exclusions
Covers the lung-related procedure codes and the relationship to nearby non-ablation lung procedure categories. Includes exclusion guidance tied to the new code group.
-
Liver ablation codes and related exclusions
