Pulmonary Artery Anomalies

Effective October 1, 2011, code 747.31 has been created for pulmonary artery coarctation and atresia. Coarctation refers to narrowing or stenosis. Narrowing of the main pulmonary artery or its branches makes it difficult for blood that is deficient in oxygen to pass from the right ventricle to the lungs to get the oxygen that is necessary for the body. The heart becomes overworked when it has to pump harder to get the blood into the lungs.
