Is There a Fix for 2011 Fees?

On Wednesday, December 8, 2010, the Medicare and Medicaid Extenders Act of 2010,  headed to President Obama for his approval in order to become law.

This bill, which is most likely to be signed, will extend the following through December 31, 2011:

  • Current Medicare payment rates.
  • Hospital geographic reclassifications (section 508 of the Medicare Modernization Act).
  • Medicare work geographic adjustment .  This is the work component of the RVU which is used for fee calculations.
  • Exceptions process for Medicare therapy caps for exceptions where outpatient therapy services are deemed medically necessary.
  • Payment of the technical component (TC) of certain pathology services.
  • 5% increase in payments for certain Medicare mental health services.
  • Outpatient hold harmless provision.
  • Medicare reasonable costs payments for certain lab tests in rural areas.
  • Transitional Medical Assistance (TMA) for low income families.
  • Special Diabetes Programs for American Indians and Alaska Natives.
